Question

Compare and contrast the structure of the mucosal layers of the stomach and small intestine. What does this tell you about the roles of the stomach and small intestine within the digestive system? Provide a brief description of two specialized structures from each organ’s mucosal layer to support your discussion of its role.

Explanation / Answer

Structure of mucosal layer of stomach ---- the layer of stomach called gasrtric mucosa is the mucous membrane layer of the stomach which contains the glands and the gastric pits . In humans it is about 1 mm thick and its surface is smooth , velvety consists of epithelium , lamina propria , muscularis mucosae . The epithelial cell that line the stomach forms mucosal epithelium layer. The surface of mucosa is a layer of non ciliated simple columnar epithelial cells called surface mucous cells.

layers of Small Intestine --- it is made of 4 layers of tissue , the mucosa forms the inner layer of epithelial tissue and is specialized for absorption of nutrients from chyme , Sub mucosa layer ---- provides blood vessels , lyphatic system to support mucosa. several layer of smooth muscle tissue forms muscularis layer that contracts and moves the small intestine , serosa --- outer most layer that is continous with mesentry and surrounds the intestine.

ROLE OF STOMACH --- muscles in the lower stomach also mix that food into a soft mush. This process is aided by the liquids we drink and by saliva, hydrochloric acid, and the enzyme pepsin. Hydrochloric acid and pepsin, produced by the glands that line the stomach, help break down proteins into their constituent amino acids. The stomach mucosa has a defense system, including an overlying layer of mucus and bicarbonate, to protect itself.

ROLE OF SMALL INTESTINE ----- The small intestine absorbs the nutrients from the digestive process. The inner wall of the small intestine is covered by millions of tiny fingerlike projections called villi.

role of stomach is provided by the mucosal layer as given above

role of small intestine is provided by villi .
