Question
A compound of molecular formula c Ho forms a yellow precipitate with 2, 4-dinitrophenylhydrazine r and gives a silver with Tollens gent. Based on this information, draw the structural formula for the compound. What should you see when the following compounds are mixed together with the given test solution? 2-Pentanone and valeraldehyde (see Table 4) have close boiling points, 102 and 103 respectively. Suggest a way that these two compounds could be distinguished and identified. (A boiling point difference of 1A degree C is too close to measure experimentally. 4. Use laboratory tests from this experiment and show how you could distinguish between the compounds listed below. Suggest tests that give a clear, positive test result for the listed compound, but are unique to it and thus, different from the others. Test Cyclopentane Cyclopentanone PentanalExplanation / Answer
ii. Pale yellow precipitate of triiodomethane indicates presence of CH3CO- group.
iii. No reaction or change as tollen’s reagent give silver mirror test when aldehyde is present.
b) i. Yellow-orange precipitate of 2,4-DNP derivative of carbonyl group (aldehyde).
ii. Orange-brown colour will turn green as chromic acid will be reduced to Cr3+ due to oxidation of aldehyde to carboxylic acid.
iii. Silver film on the surface of glass, because Ag+ is reduced to silver metal the aldehyde is oxidized to a carboxylic acid.
