Question
Which of the following questions could you reasonably investigate by doing Part 2 of Preparation and Properties of Salts? (One or more answers are possible.) Did I prepare an anhydrous salt? What is an alternative method for preparing copper (II) sulfate? Was the extra mass in my salt due to the fact that the crystals were still wet? Is it possible when preparing a salt to violate conservation of mass? How many water molecules are part of the formula for the hyrate I made? Is the extra mass in my salt due to water molecules being part of the crystal structure? Did I prepare a hydrate?
Explanation / Answer
Questions that could be answered by doing part 2 of the preparation and properties of salts would be,
-How many water molecules are part of the formula for the hydrate I made.
-Did I prepare a hydrate
Crystals formed of salts mostly have water of crystallization associated with it. The water of crystallization is calculated by dehdyrating the salt, taking the weight loss measurement and comparing it with the mass of the salt originally present.
