QUEENS COLLEGE CITY UNIVERSITY OF NEW YORK 3/21/17 Spring 2017 CHEMISTRY 113.1-5 Quiz 4 NAME CampouL make sure your answers are legible and show all WORK! -your answers should include the correct units! -your answers should have the correct number of significant figures! 1. A peice of dry ice (solid com) weighing 13.0g is placed in a 0.600 Lbottle filled with air at 0.969atm and 560.9 degree C. The bottle is capped and the dry ice changes to gas. What is the final pressure de the bottle? decomposes completely according to the following reaction at 85. oCand 2.00 atm? 3. A 4.82-L sample of carbon monoxide is collected at 55°C and 0.833 atm. What volume will the gas occupy at 1.05 atm and 25 C? a) 1.74 L b) 5.52 L c) 3.47 L d) 4.21 L

Explanation / Answer

1)

calculate initial mol of air using:

P*V = n*R*T

0.969 atm * 0.600 L = n*0.0821 atm.L/mol.K * (560.9 + 273.15) K

n = 8.49*10^-3 mol

Now mol of CO2 gas formed,

n’ = mass/molar mass

= 13.0 g / 44 g/mol

=0.2955 mol

Since volume and temperature of gas is constant,

Pi/ni = Pf/nf

0.969 / (8.49*10^-3) = Pf / (8.49*10^-3 + 0.2955)

Pf = 375.5 atm

Answer: 375.5 atm
