Question
State whether the following are characteristics of zero-, first-, or second-order kinetics for the reaction R ----> P. If there is not enough information given to determine the order of the reaction, indicate so.
Use the following key to indicate your answer:
0 = zero order 1 = first order 2 = second order N/A = insufficient information
(a) ___ The reaction rate is not affected by [R].
(b) ___ A plot of ln[R] vs. time is linear.
(c) ___ The reaction rate increases with increasing temperature.
(d) ___ A catalyst can accelerate the reaction.
(e) ___ A plot of 1/[R] vs. time is linear.
Explanation / Answer
(a) For zero order reaction the rate of reaction is independant of concentration of reactant
So answer : Zero
(b) the first order reaction is represented by equation
time = 1/K (ln [R0/Rt]
So on ploting a graph between time and ln[R] , the graph willbe linear
Answer: first order
c) the reaction rate increases with temperature for all endothermic reaction
so answer is : NA
d) a catalyst can accelerate the reaction for all reactions
So answer is NA
e) the second order reaction is
1/[R] = 1/ [R0] + kt
So if we plot a graph between time and 1/[R] it will be a straight line
Answer: second order
