Question

A sample of zinc metal is dissolved in HCl It generates a gas and a salt. If the gas is collected at 25.0 degree C and a pressure of 680 torr, its volume is found to be 12.5 liters. How many grams of zinc were used in the reaction, assuming the reaction went to completion? When a sealed glass bulb containing a gas is immersed in an ice bath at 0.00 degree C, it has a gas pressure of 345 torr. When the same bulb is placed in an oven, the gas pressure rises to 745 torr. Calculate the oven's temperature in degree F.

Explanation / Answer

Ans 5 - Given ;

Temprature = 25 degree C = 273+25 = 298 Kelvin

Pressure = 680 torr = .894 atm

Volume = 12.5 L

Using equation = PV= nRT

R = .0821 L atm K1 mol1

n = m / M

m = mass

M = Molar mass

molar mass of zinc = 65.38

the new equation will be

PV = m / M RT

putting the values in equation -

.894 x 12.5 = (m / 65.38) x .0821 x 298

11.175 = m x 0.374

m = 29.88 g
