Question

a) How does the cell potential tell you if a Galvanic cell will spontaneously generate electricity?

b) A Galvanic cell has the following cell notation:

Mn(s) I Mn^2+ (1M) II Zn^2+ (1M) I Zn (s)

- What is the anode for the cell?

- What is the cathode for the cell?

f) What do the single vertical lines represent?

g) What does the double vertical line represent?

h) If a Galvanic cell spontaneously generates electricity, what will be the sign of G for the reaction?

i) What is the definition of a battery?

j)What is an electrolytic cell?

k) How is an electrolytic cell different than a Galvanic cell?

Explanation / Answer

Answer:-

(a). If the cell potential is positive , the Galvanic cell will generate elecricity spontaneously,

because  G wiil be negative,  G = -nFEcell.

(b)  Mn(s) I Mn^2+ (1M) II Zn^2+ (1M) I Zn (s)

For a Galvanic cell anode is on the left side and the cathode is on the right side.

So, Mn(s) is anode because is on the left side.

Zn(s) is cathode because it is on the right side.

(f). the single vertical line represents the metal electrode in its electrolytic solution, so Mn(s) in Mn2+ electrolytic solution and Zn(s) in Zn2+ electrolytic solution.

(g) The double vertical lines represents the salt bridge.

(h).  The sign of G for the reaction will be negative,  G = -nFEcell. For spontaneous reaction Ecell is positive.

(i).Battery :- It is the device in which one or more Galvanic cells are connected in a series to produce electricity.

(j).Electrolytic Cell :- The electrochemical cell which converts the electric energy into chemical energy , is called a electrolytic cell.

(k). A electrolytic cell converts the electric energy into chemical energy while the Galvanic cell converts chemical energy into electric energy.
