Question
You are asked to scale up a reaction from a lab scale to a small pilot scale. You need to perform a detailed thermodynamic analysis as part of the scale-up procedure. The reaction being performed is C_2H_2(g) + 2H_2(g) rightarrow C_2H_6(g). Answer the following questions about the reaction. a. The chemist is considering performing the reaction in the solvent CCI_4 at 50.0 degree C. Calculate the quantity of energy required to heat 75.0 kg of CCI_4 from 22.0 degree C to 50.0 degree C. (SCCI_4 = 0.866 J/g degree C) b. You are given the following data: 2 C_2H_2(g) + 5O_2(g) rightarrow 4 CO_2(g) + 2 H_2O(l); Delta H degree = 26000.0 kJ/mol H_2(g) + 1/2 O_2(g) rightarrow H_2O(l) Delta H delta = -285.8 kJ/mol 2 C_2H_6(g) + 7 O_2(g) rightarrow 4 CO_2(g) + 6H_2O(l); Delta H degree = 3119.6 kJ/mol Calculate Delta H degree for the reaction C_2H_2(g) + 2H_2(g) rightarrow C_2H_6(g) c. Is the reaction endothermic or exothermic? (Circle one.) d. Do you need to take into account cooliExplanation / Answer
a)heat absorbed by CCl4 = mass x specific heat x difference temperature
= 75 x1000g x 0.866J/g.K (50-22)
= 1818600 J
= 1818.6kJ
b) We can get the required equation by
1/2 (eq.1) + 2 (eq.2 ) - eq.3
Thus delta H for the required reaction =
= 1/2 (-2600) +2(-285.8) -(-3119)
= 1247.4 kJ
c) the overall reaction is endothermic as both the process are endothermic.
d) to make the reaction happen , we need to heat the reaction.
