An aqueous ScCl3solution is electrolyzed under 1 bar pressure using platinum electrodes.
(a) Write the half-reactions predicted to occur at the anode and cathode, based on the standard cell potentials given below.
1.360
1.229
-0.828
-2.080
Half-reaction at anode:
Half-reaction at cathode:
(b) What is the expected decomposition potential? ____V
Explanation / Answer
Two possible reductants are : Sc^3+ and O2. But as O2 is present is aqueous solution in a very small amount, Sc^3+ will redyced.
Cathodic reaction : Sc^3+ + 3e- ---> Sc (s)
To possible oxidants are : Cl^- and H2O. But as the oxidation potential of Cl^-/Cl is smaller than that of H2O, Cl^- will re oxidised.
Anodic reaction : 2Cl^- ----> Cl2 + 2e-
expected decomposition potential = -2.08 V + (-1.36) = -0.72 V
