Question

Briefly (a short paragraph) give the objective(s) for experiment 12. (see pg. 6 for help) List three properties of transition metal compounds that distinguish them from main group compounds. Explain why a monodentate ligand of concentration 0.1 M may be capable of displacing water from a metal complex, [M(H_2O)_6]^2+, in aqueous solution even though water is far more abundant (water is tilde 55 M). The number of metal-ligand bonding interactions around a metal center is called the ___________________ Write the chemical formula of a polydentate ligand that is not found in this laboratory manual.

Explanation / Answer

1)objective - To study the mechanism of ligand exchange between complex, Co(NH3)5H2O3+, and the nitrite ion, NO2-colorimetrically and to measure the rates of exchange and ligand isomerization.

2) three properties are:

a)The transition metals are more electronegative than the main group metals, and therefore more likely to form covalent compounds.

b) To form complexes that have an excess no of negative ions.

c)  the ease by which transition metal form stable compounds with neutral molecules, such as water or ammonia where as not so the case in main group metals.

3) because water tends to form weaker complex with H2O molecules that very labile so the stronger monodentate ligand will tend to decompose the existing complex and withdraw the metal ion into a complex with itself.

4) coordination number

5)irrelevant question as i doesn't have a lab manual.
