Question

1-heptanol has a pleasant aroma and is sometimes used in cosmetics to enhance the fragrance. Draw the structure for 1-heptanol. Is this a primary, secondary, or tertiary alcohol? Classify each of the following as a primary, secondary, or tertiary alcohol: 2-methyl-2-butanol 1, 2-dimethylcyclohexanol 2, 3, 4-trimethylcyclopentanol 3, 3-dimethyl-2-pentanol Write a general equation representing the preparation of an alcohol by hydrogenation of an aldehyde or a ketone. Write a general equation representing the oxidation of a primary alcohol. How do we recognize oxidation and reduction in organic compounds? What is the role of the coenzyme nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD*) in enzyme-catalyzed oxidation-reduction reactions? Why do hydrocarbons have lower boiling points than aldehydes and ketones of comparable molar mass? Write an equation representing the reaction of glucose with the Benedict's reagent. How was this test used in medicine? Draw the generalized equation for the oxidation of a secondary alcohol. Lactose is the major sugar found in mammalian milk. It is a disaccharide composed of monosaccharides glucose and galactose. Is lactose a hemiacetal or an acetal? Explain your choice. Explain why carboxylic acids are weak acids.

Explanation / Answer

2.a)2- methyl -2-butanol is a tertiary alcohol

b)1,2-dimethyl cyclohexanol is a secondary alcohol

c)2,3,4-trimethyl cyclopentanol is a secondary alcohol

d)3,3-dimethyl-2-pentanol is a primary alcohol

8)H-C=O(CHOH)4CH2OH +Cu2+ ---------> HO-C=O(CHOH)4CH2OH +Cu+

D- glucose reacts with Benedict's reagent to form D-gluconoic acid

In medicine it is used to show positive test for reducing sugars. Reducing sugars are oxidised by the copper ion in the solution to form a carboxylic acid and a reddish pprecipitate of copper (I) oxide. This formation of reddish ppt within 3 minutes gives a positive test for the presence of reducing sugar.
