Question

Using sandpaper and gloves, polish a 1 cm times 3 cm copper strip until it is shiny and free of oxidation Using alligator clip wires, connect the copper strip to the negative terminal of a DC power supply, and connect a graphite electrode to the positive terminal of the DC power supply. Add approximately 40 mL of a solution containing nickel ions (labeled Nickel Plating Solution) to a 50 mL beaker. Set the power supply to 2 volts, and immerse both electrodes in the solution in the beaker. Be careful not to touch the leads together. Allow the reaction to continue for at least a minute, until a good coating has been established on the electrode. Record your observations in your data sheet, and then remove the electrodes and turn off the DC supply. Write the 1/2 reactions which occur, presuming the evolution of oxygen from the positive electrode. Need to write 1/2 reaction in part 2 - then question 2 for balanced redox 1/2 reaction and combination Write the balanced redox 1/2 reactions for the anode and cathode in part 2. Write the balanced reaction for the combination of the two.

Explanation / Answer

Cathode Half reaction:

In the solution there are Ni2+ and H+ ions,

the reduction potential of H+ is more than that of Ni2+. So, at cathode H+ gets reduced to produce H2 gas.

2H+ (aq.) + 2e -----------> H2 (g)

Anode Half Reaction:

At anode OH- ions of water gets oxidised to produce O2 gas.

4OH- (aq.) ----------> 2 H2O (l) + O2 (g) + 4 e-

OVerall reaction is:

4 H+ (aq.) + 4 OH- (aq.) ------------> 2H2O (l) + 2 H2 (g) + O2 (g)
