For the following questions, you MUST show your SET-UP AND CALCULATIONS to receive ANY CREDIT! Use an extra sheet of paper, if needed. Be sure to express your answers to the correct number of significant figures and that your answers have the correct units. Also, be sure that I can CLEARLY interpret your writing and final answers! Aqueous potassium hydroxide is mixed with aqueous aluminum nitrate to form solid aluminum hydroxide and aqueous potassium nitrate. a. Write a balanced chemical equation for this reaction. b. What is the theoretical yield of the solid, if 4.71 times 10^26 molecules of potassium hydroxide reacts with aluminum nitrate?Explanation / Answer
a.
The balanced chemical equation for this reaction is-
Al(NO3)3(aq) +3KOH(aq)3KNO3(aq) +Al(OH)3(s)
b.
From the reaction , it is clear that
3 moles of KOH reacts with 1 mole of Al(NO3)3
Or, 3 x 6.022x1023 molecules of KOH reacts with 6.022x1023 molecules of Al(NO3)3
Then, 4.71 x 1026 molecules of KOH will react with =
=(4.71 x 1026 x 6.022x1023)/(3 x6.022x1023)
=1.57 x 1026 molecules of Al(NO3)3
=2.60 x 102 moles of Al(NO3)3
Now,
1 mol of Al(NO3)3 produces 1 mol of Al(OH)3
2.60 x 102 moles of Al(NO3)3 will produce 2.60 x 102 moles of Al(OH)3
Thus, theoretical yield of the solid Al(OH)3 will be=
=2.60 x 102 moles
