Question
I'm completely lost. Please help me! I know it's a lot. Copper penny experiment: 2 Pennies were used (composed of mostly copper, zinc, &. First pennies get coated in copper II oxide & off (mixture of 20 mL of 5% acetic acid & 10 g of NaCl. Once penny gets cleaned in goes into beaker on a hot plate with zinc sulfate & strips of solid zinc for 10 minutes color change occurs. Why does penny change color? Penny gets rinsed off in cool DI water & placed directly on hot plate until color change. Why does penny change color? Penny is put into a beaker of cool DI water Penny is shiny in color? Which of these color changes are chemical or physical changes? With explaination please! Use chemical equation if possible Would penny change color a second time if it were not heated on the hot plate?Explanation / Answer
when copper oxide is reacted with zinc solid( strips), the following reaction takes place
Zn(s) + CuO (s)= Cu(s) +ZnO(s)
zinc metal amd copper are diplace each other, however it is redox recation mainly it occur because of zinc oxide goes yellow when heated and retuen white when it cooled.this hapend because changes in crystal structure.so it is physical phenomenon.
more reactive metal acts as reducing agent and less reactive metal oxide acts as oxidizing agent.
hope this helps u little
