Question

If you performed a PCR experiment to target a 1 kb region starting with two copies of double-stranded DNA and everything was 100% efficient, how many 1 kb-sized double-stranded DNA molecules would be present in the reaction tube after 12 cycles of amplification? Explanation / Answer

Here PCR ( polymerase chain reaction ) is 100% efficient it means everything is going very well. Now a 1 kb region starting with two copies of double-stranded DNA are going to many cycles for the amplification.

Here is a trick to calculate how many 1 kb-sized (any other) double-stranded DNA molecules would be present in the reaction after 'n' no of cycle - 2(n+1)

For example no of 1 kb sized double-stranded DNA molecules would be present in the reaction tube after 12 cycles of amplification = 2(12+1) = 213 = 8192 1 kb sized double-stranded DNA molecules.
