Mixture (a) KSCN color d, Mixture (a) NaOH observations qulden yllvw clean e. Mixture (a) H2O color QUESTIONS Write the balanced equilibrium equation for formation of the complex ion: For the indicated observations, explain the color changes observed. You must read the directions under VI Assignment before giving your oplanations. 3 5

Explanation / Answer

Fe3+ (aq) + 3H2O (l) --------> Fe(OH)3 + 3H+

Fe3+ (aq) + SCN- ----------> FeSCN2+

The colour of the mixture depends upon the side where the equilibrium shifts.

According to lechatlier principle, on increasing the concentration of the reactant, the equilibrium shifts towards the right, thus changing the colour of the solution.

When the equilibrium shifts towards the left on decreasing the concentration of the reactant, the colour of the reactant starts retaining and hence there is darkening of colour from the product to the reactant side.
