Question

A water-based heat exchanger at a cement production plant cools the hot clinker exiting the kiln and transfers the heat to raw materials entering the kiln. 400 kg of clinker pass through the heat exchanger per hour. If the clinker enters the heat exchanger at 1300 degree C and leaves at 700 degree C, what is the flow rate of water through the heat exchanger in liters/hour? The water enters at 25 degree C and leaves at 100 degree C. C_p of water = 4.184 J/g/degree C; density of water is 1 kg/liter, C_p of clinker = 0.8 J/g/degree C.

Explanation / Answer

According to the principle of calorimetry we know that heat absorbed by weater=heat released by clinker.

Let's consider the water flow rate =x kg/h

So aacording to the question 400*0.8*(1300-700)=x*4.184*(100-25)

or, x=400*0.8*600/(4.184*75) kg/h=611.85 kg/h
