The process in which the proteins or nucleic acids lose the quaternary structure, tertiary structure and secondary structure which is present in their native state by application of external stress is known as denaturation.

a) This stress can be in the form of heat or radiations for example in the process of autoclaving instruments at 120 deg C, heat brings about denaturation. Heat can increase the kinetic energy and cause the proteins in the microbes to vibrate rapidly. This disrupts the hydrogen bonds in the microbes and causes denaturation.

b) Tannic acid lowers the pH of the burnt skin and thus prevents infectious microbes from growing in the affected areas. The protein will lose its negative charge at this lower pH for this pH is below the isoelectric point of the protein. Thus all the molecules will contain only positive charge and this be repelled from each other. Thus bringing denaturation.

c) Organic solvents such as ethanol prevents infectious microbes from growing in the affected areas. Ethanol molecules have high affinity to hydrogen bonding. Hence they can break the existing hydrogen bonds causing denaturation in proteins.
