Question
Determine your percent yield of sodium chloride in reaction A. Show your work for each step. Write the balanced equation for A-the reaction between sodium bicarbonate and hydrochloric acid. Using mass-to-mass stoichiometry, calculate the theoretical yield of Nacl for reaction A. Use your initial mass of sodium bicarbonate reactant as a starting point, along with the relevant mole ratio from the balanced equation to perform this calculation. Calculate your percent yield of sodium chloride product.Explanation / Answer
NaHCO3 (aq.) + HCl (aq.) ---------> NaCl (aq.) + H2O (l) + CO2 (g)
Mass of sodium bicarbonate = 0.452 g.
Molar mass of sodium bicarbonate = 23 + 1 + 12 + 3 (12) = 84 g/mol
Moles of sodium carbonate = mass / molar mass = 0.452 / 84 = 0.00538 mol
From the balanced equation,
1 mol sodium bicarbonate = 1 mol sodium chloride
then, 0.00538 mol sodium bicarbonate = 0.00538 mol sodium chloride.
So, theoretical yield of sodium chloride = moles * molar mass = 0.00538 * 58.5 = 0.315 g.
Konwing the actual yield of sodium chloride we could be able to calculate percent yield as follows,
% yield of sodium chloride = (Actual yield / Theoretical yield) * 100
