Question
Hi-Can you please provide me a step by step instruction on this problem? If you do so, I will give you a good rating. Thanks.
Consider the following data for a particular radionuclide:
Time Nt
0 min 1.23 g
3 1.15
6 1.08
9 1.01
12 0.940
What is the half-life (in min) of this radionuclide? Answer is 30.9
This is what I have so far:
0.693/ t1/2 = (1/3 min) ln {1.23 g/ 1.15 g}
t1/2=(0.693)(1/3 min) ln {1.23 g/ 1.15 g}
However, when I calculate it I don`t even come close to 30.9. What am I doing wrong?
Explanation / Answer
t1/2 = t / log1/2(Nt / N0)
where t1/2 = Half-life
t = Elapsed time = 3 min
Nt = Final amount = 1.15 g
N0 = Initial amount = 1.23 g
t1/2 = t / log1/2(Nt / N0) = 3 min / log1/2(1.15 g / 1.23 g) = 3 min / 0.097 = 30.9 min
Half-life = 30.9 min
