Question
Solution A has a pH of 3.8, and solution B has a pH of 7.7. Which solution is more acidic? What is the [H_3O^+] in solution A? Express your answer to one significant figures and include the appropriate units. What is the[H_3O^+] in solution B? Express your answer to one significant figures and include the appropriate units. What is the [OH^-] in solution A? Express your answer to one significant figures and include the appropriate units. What is the [OH^-] in solution B? Express your answer to one significant figures and include the appropriate units.Explanation / Answer
We know that
pH will be less than 7 if solution is acidic and if will be greater than 7 it will be Basic
So less is the pH than 7, higher is the Acidity
Part A)
Solution A having pH 3.8 and Solution B having pH 7.7
So Solution A is more Acidic than B
Part B)
We know that
pH = -log [H+] = -log [H3O+]
then for solution A
[H3O+] = 10-pH
= 10-3.8 = 0.00016 approx = 1.6 x 10-4 M
Part C ) same for solution B
[H3O+] = 10-pH
= 10-7.7 = 2 x 10-8 M
Part D)
We need to Find [OH-]
So we need pOH for solution A
We know that pH + pOH =14 , then pOH = 14 - 3.8 = 10.2
And pOH = -log[OH-]
then
[OH-] = 10-pOH
= 10-10.2
= 6.3 x 10-11 M
Part E)
same as above for solution B
[OH-] = 10-pOH
= 10-(14-7.7)
= 5 x 10-7 M
