Question
A particular balloon is designed to be inflated to a volume of no more than 2.5 L. If the balloon is filled with 2.0 L OF helium at sea level (pressure at sea level is 760 mmHg), is released, and rises to an altitude at which the atmospheric pressure is only 500 mmHg, will the balloon burst? (Assume temperature is constant) A particular balloon is designed to be inflated to a volume of no more than 2.5 L. If the balloon is filled with 2.0 L OF helium at sea level (pressure at sea level is 760 mmHg), is released, and rises to an altitude at which the atmospheric pressure is only 500 mmHg, will the balloon burst? (Assume temperature is constant)Explanation / Answer
at constant temperature, the following relation holds up
P1V1 = P2V2
P1 = 760 mmHg P2 = 500 mmHg
V1 = 2.0 L V2 = unknown
V2 = P1V1 / P2
= (760 X 2 ) / 500
= 3.04 L
As the volume of balloon can not be more than 2.5 L and V2 > 2.5 , therefore the balloon will burst!
