Question

ionic compound logic puzzle Five students (Alfred, Colin, George, Oliver and Thomas) are given unknown aqueous solutions, each containing a different ionic compound. The ionic compounds contain ammonium (NH_4'), barium (Ba^2-), iron (Fe^2+), lithium (Li^+), or zinc (Zn^2+) as the cation and acetate(CH_3COO'), chloride (CI'), fluoride(F'), hydroxide (OH') or nitrate (NO^-_2) as the anion. No single ion is repeated. Using the clues below, determine the ionic compound contained in each student's solution and its molar mass. The compound with the largest molar mass had a cation:anion ratio of 1:2. Its molar mass was over 260g/mol. Oliver's compound had the second smallest molar mass and it contained all polyatomic ions. The cation in Colin's compound did not have +2 charge. Thomas's compound contained a d-block metal, George's did not. The compound with the middle value for the molar mass formed a precipitate with ammonium carbonate, it was not Alfred's compound. The compound with the smallest molar mass formed a precipitate with potassium phosphate. Solution Reporting Table

Explanation / Answer

As per the clue compound with largest molar mass (261.337) has cation anion ratio 1:2 is only Barium nitrate. This is George's compound as it didn't have d-block element (Barium belongs to S block)

Oliver has the compound having second smallest molar mass contain all polyatomic ions so it is only ammonium acetate(CH3COONH4)

Collin's compound didn't have +2 charge so it is LiF

Thomas compoud is Zn(OH)2 , where Zn is the d-block element

Zn(OH)2 has the molar mass in the middle range 99.424. It will form precipitate with ammonium carbonate resulting Ammonium hydroxide and Zinc carbonate.

LiF has the smallest molar mass of 25.939 which will form a precipitate of lithium phosphate (Li3PO4) with Potassium Phosphate.
