15. he energy diagram below describes the conversion of starting material (S M) into two products by different pathways. What statement below is true of this energy diagram? S.M Product 2 Product 1 (a) For reversible reactions, equal amounts of Product 1 and Product 2 will be formed. (b) For reversible reactions, Product 2 will dominate at equilibrium (c) For irreversible reactions, Product 1 will dominate. (d) None of the above are true.

Explanation / Answer

Option "a" is not true since the activation energies for the formation of products is not same and hence for reversible reactions equal amounts of Product 1 and Product 2 are not formed.

Option"b" is also not true. This is because at equilibrium product 2 is converted to Starting material more easily than the product 1.Hence for reversible reactions product 2 will not dominate at equilibrium.

Option "c" is false. For the case of irreversible reactions, formation of product 2 is a lot easier than product 1 due to its less activation energy when compared to activation energy for product 1.
Thus option "d" (None of the above are true) is the correct answer.
