Question
1.What is the difference between the trophozoite and cyst? Tell whether the trophozoite or cyst is more likely to cause an infection? Which form is more likely to cause symptoms during an infection? Why?
2. Acanthamoeba is found as both a trophozoite and a cyst, and both forms seem equally effective at causing eye infections. Why do you think this is?
3. In contrast, amebic dysentery is due almost exclusively to infection with the cyst form of Entamoeba histolytica, even though the organism can be found as both a trophozoite and a cyst in the food. Why is this so?
4.The number and size of harmful algal blooms seems correlated to an increased use of fertilizers. Speculate on a possible connection between these two events.
Explanation / Answer
1. Cyst is the dormant state of an organism that can survive outside the host including during unfavourable environmental conditions. Cyst is a non-dividing form of an organism, which is covered by rigid cell coat. An organism in cyst form is less likely to cause infections, but it is the most ingested form (transmission occurs through cyst form), which is converted into trophozoite form in the host intestine.
Trophozoite form an organism can divide (binary fission) in the host intestine and it causes infection. Trophozoite cannot survive outisede the organism, and it contains liable cell membrane.
The cyst form generally cannot cause infection because cell lies in dormant stage. So, infection is generally caused by cysts (they transmit), and symptoms during an infection are caused by trophozoites.
