Question

"Saving the bay" the title of an article that appeared in Daily Press, our local paper, a couple of years ago. Another article titled "What's Killing the Chesapeake Bay?" appeared the in Washington Post also a few years ago. Both of these articles were referring to the many years of pollution of the Chesapeake Bay. Considering that the Chesapeake Bay watershed covers a wide geographical area (from New York to Virginia), provide a detailed discussion of the nature (source) of the Bay pollution problem. Include in your discussion "point source" and "non-point source" pollution.

Explanation / Answer

the major pollutant to bay is excess of nutrients and toxicchemicals those are coming from the agriculture, via waste water, storm water, urban runoff, vehicles emmitting wastages and other sources.these majorly increasing the growth of algae blooms which are blocking the sunlight that under water baygrasses need to grow, when these algae die, they are decomposedin a process that deplets the water of oxygen, which all aquatic animals need to survive.these algaes are creating the condition that are harmful ti foshes and shellfish and other living creatures under the water.non point pollution occurs when rain runs offfarmland, city streets, construction areas and in other driveways enters our water ways, this runoff contains harmful toxics and pathogens, sediments which does not comefroma single source or point hence theyarecalling as NON POINTN POLLUTION SOURCES.underwater plants and aquatic animals are mainly threatened by this source.POINT SOURCES are those which are discharging directly into the water such are coming from sewage treatment plants and dumping toxic material and industrial facilities.these contain major sources of nitrogen and phosphorous.,
