Question

The following elementary, liquid phase reaction occurs in an adiabatic CSTR: A doubleheadarrow B The entering flow rate is 10 dm^3/s with an entering concentration of 2 M of A and the feed temperature is 300 K. (a) What are the equilibrium conversion and temperature? (b) What is the reactor volume necessary to the equilibrium conversion in a CSTR? Additional information: Cp_A = Cp_B = 60 cal/mol/K delta H degree _rxn = -10,000 cal/mol A The figures of k, K_c, and equilibrium conversion as functions of temperature (K) are in the following page.

Explanation / Answer

Ans:- Here CA0 = 2mol/dm3

k=10dm3 /sec

Now Kc =kCA03

            = 10 x (2)3

            = 80mol/dm3 sec

Now Let equilibrium conversion be Keq

Therefore

Kc = Keq (1+Keq ) / 2CA0 (1-Keq)2

80 =Keq(1+Keq) / 2 x 2 (1-Keq)2

Keq = 0.49

From the conversion graph

At conversion 0.49

Temperature = 420K

Now Reactor volume V= CA0 Keq / kCA02 (1-Keq)2

                                 = 2x0.49 / 10 x (2)2(1-0.49)2

                                  =480.39dm3
