Question

Which of the following would be the result of increasing the temperature at which GC is run? I knew this would cause a faster elution time because temperature increases kinetic energy but I am not sure how this results in poorer seperation. Can you explain what it means by "seperation" . I watched videos on the Gas Chromatography but I am not clear on how things are seperated----i thought that the more volatile will adhere less to the liquid stationary phase thus elute quicker.

After this can you explain the effect of decreasing the temperature on seperation? I am assuming we would have better seperation?

Thanks :)

Explanation / Answer

Temperature influences retention as well as relative retention in gas chromatography (GC) and thusly, when we change temperature, we likewise change the selectivity of theseparation.

This is valid as we modify the isothermal division temperature, additionally as we change the slant of the temperature program gradient.

2. An increase of around 30 °C in oven temperature will lessen retention time by half.
