Question
Use the table of standard reduction potentials for the following exercises. Predict if the following will occur under standard conditions, if so, write the products with correct phases: HCl (aq) + Au (s) HCl (aq) + Na (s) Au^3+ (aq) + Na (s) Find a reagent that can oxidize Br^-1 to Br2 but cannot oxidize Cl^-1 to CI2. Assuming standard conditions, indicate which of the following is true: H2 (g) can reduce Ag^+(aq). H2 (g) can reduce Ni^+2 (aq). Fe^2+ (aq) can reduce Cu^2+ (aq). H^+ (aq) can oxidize Mg(s). Pb^2+(aq) can oxidize Ni(s).Explanation / Answer
Ans 4
The metals which have standard reduction potential less than hydrogen , can displace it from the acid.
A) Au has higher reduction potential than hydrogen hence it will not react with HCl.
B) 2HCl + 2Na ---> NaCl + H2
Sodium has negative standard reduction potential so it will replace hydrogen from HCl , it reacts vigorously to form NaCl.
C) Au3+ + 3Na ---> 3Na+ + Au
Sodium has less standard reduction potential than Gold , hence it will reduce it and get itself oxidised.
