Question

Nitrogen gas has a Cp of 29.3 J mol^-1 K^-1 at 1 bar and 25 degrees C is isochorically heated first to 5 bar. It is then isobarically cooled to the initial temp of 25 degrees C. If nitrogen has behaves as a van deer waals gas, determine the total heat and work requirements.
If MATLAB is needed please use it. Please do not use equations with gamma in it. Nitrogen gas has a Cp of 29.3 J mol^-1 K^-1 at 1 bar and 25 degrees C is isochorically heated first to 5 bar. Explanation / Answer

For the 1st step ie isochoric heating work done is zero as w=-PV where V=0

Heat change at constant volume=nCvdT=1*(29.3-8.314)*(5*298-298)J=20.015 kJ

For the 2nd step ie isobaric cooling heat change at constant pressure=nCpdT=1*29.3*1192 J=34.925 kJ

Work done in isobaric cooling=-P(V2-V1)=-0.987*(V-5V) (1 bar=1/1.013 atm=0.987 atm)
