Such flasks are not manufactured to determine exact volumes, and you can be quite confident that it does NOT contain exactly 125.00 mL. Yet you will need to determine the exact volume of this flask in your experimental setup. In the space below, write a procedure for determining the actual volume of the flask using water, a scale, and thermometer, and the density of water at various temperatures. Account for the following items when you determine the volume of your flask: During the experiment, you will seal the flask with a rubber stopper and the stopper will occupy some of the volume of the flask. 2. If 0.015 grams of Mg react with excess HCI, how many moles of H2 gas will be produced?Explanation / Answer
1. First off, you would have to weight the flask, along with the stopper that you will use. Then add the water into the flask and weight the system again in the scale. Measure the temperature of the water with the termometer, so as to determine it's density at said temperature. Once you have these measuments, you need to subtract the weight of the flask and the stopper to the weight of the system. This will give you the mass of the water inside the flask.
Having both the density of the water and the mass of it, you can use the formula
ho = m/V (density equals mass over volume)
You can solve for volume, having density times mass. You have now both values for water, so you can multiply them and get the real volume of the flask.
It's important to consider that some of the stopper occupied a part of the volume of the flask. Either you consider it as imprecission in the results, or you can weight it on its own and (if you know the material and it's a pure one) get the density and calculate the volume it occupied in the flask.
