Explanation / Answer

15) Moles of NaCl = (volume of solution in L)*(concentration in mol/L) = (750 mL)*(1 L/1000 mL)*(0.5 mol/L) = 0.375 mole.

The new volume of the solution is (750 – 150) mL = 600 mL = (600 mL)*(1 L/1000 mL) = 0.600 L.

New concentration of NaCl = (moles of NaCl)/(volume of solution in L) = (0.375 mole)/(0.600 L) = 0.625 mol/L 0.63 M (ans).

Ans: (C) 0.63 M

16) Copper (III) nitrate = Cu(NO3)3

Ammonium phosphate = (NH4)3PO4

This is a double displacement reaction where the anions change their positions. The products are:

Copper (III) phosphate = CuPO4

Ammonium nitrate = NH4NO3

All the species except copper (III) phosphate are in aqueous state and hence dissociate into ions. Copper (III) phosphate remains as solid.

Decompose the aqueous species into ions and write

Cu3+ (aq) + 3 NO3- (aq) + 3 NH4+ (aq) + PO43- (aq) --------> CuPO4 (s) + 3 NH4+ (aq) + 3 NO3- (aq)

Cancel out the common ions from both sides and write the net ionic equation as

Cu3+ (aq) + PO43- (aq) ---------> CuPO4 (s)

Ans: (b)

17) The sodium, potassium and nitrate salts are water soluble. Iron (III) hydroxide and iron (III) carbonate are both insoluble in water. Hence option (e) is the correct answer.

Ans: (e)

18) KCl is a 1:1 electrolyte which means that 1 mole of KCl furnishes 1 mole of potassium ions and 1 mole of chloride ions. The second picture depicts equal number of ions and is the correct answer.

Ans: (b)

19) The vapor pressure of a substance depends on the intermolecular forces present in the substance. If a molecule has weak intermolecular forces like dipole-dipole forces and London dispersion forces, then the vapor pressure of the molecule will be high. All the substances except diethyl ether show strong intermolecular forces like hydrogen bonding. Hence, diethyl ether will have the highest vapor pressure.

Ans: (d)
