Question

We are writing to request assistance from our state's chemistry students in assessing the impact of the greenhouse effect. To aid in this process, please reply with the following information 1) A short overview of the greenhouse effect (1-2 paragraphs) 2) One proposed reaction associated with the greenhouse effect is the reaction of methane gas with oxygen gas to produce three gases: formaldehyde, water and ozone. Write out and balance this chemical equation. 3) If this reaction occurs in the atmosphere, it occurs at approximately constant temperature and volume Assuming that we are working with ideal gases, how does the pressure change after the reaction is complete? Make a hypothesis and explain your reasoning. 4) Formaldehyde is only safe at a concentration of less than o.10 ppm. The safe concentration of ozone is 5 times less than that of formaldehyde. Express the safe concentration of ozone in ppb. As this is an official report to the state list any references that you use in writing the report at the end of the document. Thank you for your assistance.

Explanation / Answer

1) Greenhouse Effect is related to the phenomenone when gases present in the earth's atmosphere absorbs UV radiation from the sun and then emits it in the IR region. The emitted radiation is dissipated in all direction and thus warms up the surface of the earth. This is the cause of global warming on the earth's surface.

2) The chemical reaction working here is,

methane reacts with oxygen to produce formaldehyde, water and ozone. Of which ozone is a green house gas.

CH4 + 4O2 --> HCHO + H2O + 2O3

3) The reaction occurs at ideal gas conditions. Under normal conditions after the reaction has occured at the earth's surface the pressure would increase as we are forming more number of gas molecules starting with lower number of gas molecules.

4) Safe concentration of ozone would be about 0.02 ppm, which is five times less than the safe concentration of formaldehyde formed from methane upon reaction with oxygen.

0.02 ppm of ozone = 20 ppb of ozone
