Question
This is the best taken. Please screenshot and zoom in A certain substance exists in two phases at equilibrium at temperature T_1 and pressure P_1 One phase alpha is a crystalline solid while the other beta is an amorphous glass The density of the a phase is 0.532 g/cm^2 while that of the beta phase is 0.5 a) If the external pressure is increased, will the temperature at which the alpha - beta conversion takes place increase or decrease. Explain in 50 words or less. b) If the external pressure is increased isothermally, what will happen? (25 words or less).Explanation / Answer
The temperaure will increase on increase in external pressure. Crystallinity also depends on the pore size of the material which indeed collapse and lead to the phase transformation of amorphous nature. (It can be easily seen on comapring with the XRD data) Temperature is a measure of the average kinetic energy of molecules which even has contribution from external pressure source Structural development and phase transformation can also be possible thereby. Molecular dynamics can clearly explain on the phase change of crystalline to amorphous transformation with the effect of pressure and temperature.
