Question
On top of Mt. Din (0.38 atm).
1. Find the deltaG and deltaH of vaporization of 2 kgs of water at 100 Celsius and 1 atm.
2.If the pressure on top of Mt. Din is 0.38 atm. What is the boiling point now?
3.If you boil water at 98 Celsius inside of a pressure cooker on top of Mt. Din. What is the pressure inside the pressure cooker?
4. If the ratio of gases (~21%O2) is tge same as 1 atm as it is on Mt. Din, then what is the difference in concentration of O2 dissolved in the blood on top of Mt. Din versus NYC?
Explanation / Answer
2. Using Clausius-Clapeyron equation,
ln(p2/p1) = dHv/R[1/T1 - 1/T2]
with,
p1 = 1 atm
p2 = 0.38 atm
T1 = 100 + 273 = 373 K
T2 = normal boiling point at 0.38 atm
dHv = 40.65 kJ/mol
R = gas constant
we get,
ln(0.38/1) = 40650/8.314 [1/373 - 1/T2]
T2 = 347.36 K = 74.36 oC
3. When T2 = 98 + 273 = 371 K
p2 = ?
we get,
ln(p2/1) = 40650/8.314 [1/373 - 1/371]
p2 = 0.932 atm
