Question
What types of reactions are involved when acid is added to a solution containing SO_3 ^2- ion, resulting in the release of gaseous SO_2? In analyzing an unknown salt containing one of the anions discussed in this module, a student obtains negative results for all three classification reactions. Briefly explain. A solution is known to contain at least one of the anions discussed in this module. The yellowish precipitate that forms when AgNO_3 solution is added to the solution dissolves when HNQ_3 is added. Which anion(s) may be present? A BaCl_2 solution is added to this solution. A white precipitate forms that dissolves when HNO-3 is added. No color, odor, or evolved gas is observed. Which anion is present? Describe a confirmatory reaction for this anion. In some of the classification reactions, it is important when there is no reaction upon addition of a second reagent. For which anions is this true?Explanation / Answer
(4) (1) iodide anion may be present.
AgNO3 (aq.) + I- (aq.) -----------------> AgI (s, yellow precipitate) + NO3- (aq.)
(2) Carbonate anion may be present.
CO32- (aq.) + BaCl2 (aq.) -------------> BaCO3 (white precipitate) + 2 Cl- (aq.)
BaCO3 (s) + HNO3 (aq.) -------------> Ba(NO3)2 (aq.) + H2CO3 (aq.)
(5) Sulphate anion.
When BaCl2 is added to the solution containing Suphate anion, it forms a white precipitate. Further addition of concentration HCl does not affect the precipitate.
BaCl2 (aq.) + SO42- (aq.) ---------------> BaSO4 (white precipitate) + 2 Cl- (aq.)
BaSO4 (s) + conc. HCl ---------> No reaction
