1.Look at the graphics and text in the section “The Human Spectrum.”    Why is skin color a poor way to define races into categories like ‘white,’ and ‘black,’ according to this section?

2.Move on to “Race and Human Variation.” What is the main point in this section regarding human genetic variation?

3.Go to the section “Only Skin Deep.” Address the questions asked at the opening of the section: Why do some people have light skin and others have dark skin? How do scientists explain the broad spectrum of human skin color around the globe?

Explanation / Answer

1. Because human skin color exists on a continum from dark to light. These shades are measured in native populations around the world. Even within population there is a range of dark to light. But as it is on continum it is very wrong and biased to say that this is a bad color when we know it is just one point far on the scale and we cant bifurcate on this.

Most important is skin tones overlap both within and between native peoples and you cant judge anybody culture or individual identity.

2. The diagram shows that the genetic variation in populations such as europeans and asians are actually subsets of the variations in the african population. People have lived in africa for longer than anywhere else.

3.As it is suggested that it is the adaptation under the sun. These are adaptation in accordance with the geography and the sub ultraviolet raidation, not race
