1. Benzoic acid
(a) maximum volume of water needed = 1 x 100/6.8 = 14.7 ml
(b) % recovery = [1 - (15 x 0.34/100)] x 100/1 = 95.0%
2. acetanilide
(a) % recovery (theoretical) = [515 - (5 x 15/1)] x 100/515 = 85.4 %
(b) recovery from experiment = 53.4%
(c) The remaining is impurity = 85.4 - 53.4 = 32%
3. Errors
(a) If higher volume of hot water is added, nothing will recrystallize out of solution, all remain in soluble state.
(b) The crystals of acetanilide forms on fravity filtration apparatus as it cools down.
(c) Crystals of acetanilide redissolves with water wash. Lower yield.
