Question
A 1.40 mL sample of red blood cells containing chromium-51 as a tracer was injected into a patient. After several hours a 5.00 mL sample of blood was drawn and its activity compared to the activity of the injected tracer sample. If the collected sample activity was 0.16 % of the original tracer, calculate the total blood volume of the patient (see Chemistry in Action: Medical Uses of Radioactivity, p. 338 in the textbook). Express your answer using two significant figure and include the appropriate units.Explanation / Answer
1.40 mL of the Chromium tracer gets dissolved or mixed into the complete blood volume .
If 5 mL of the blood sample has 0.16% of tracer activity i.e. (0.16 x 1.40) / 100 = 0.00224 mL , then the total amount of blood volume will be ( 5 X 1.4) / 0.00224 = 3125 mL or 3.125 L
Ans = 3.1 L
