Question
Help with parasitology class: Beetle lab experiment HELP me form a procedure!
I have one strain (unknown) of each tribolium confusum and T. castaneum, some beetles. I starve these beetles for one week and then feed them whole wheat flour and yeast, wait until they are infected (takes 2 weeks), and then measure the test variables after 2-3 weeks. if you want to test the eddects on xxxx on infectivity then you have to set up experiment before feeding/infecting the beetles.
I`m thinking of doing my project on either effects of infection on death, effects of infection on movement
I have to form a hypothesis, and do a protocol - how im going to complet the study, listing what I need and write the procedure making sure to include the variables im measuring and how they will be measured. Please please help I have never needed to do this type of lab before - I`m having a lot of issues with the protocol
Explanation / Answer
You need to form a hypothesis and do a protocol.
First the hypothesis: To form a hypothesis you need to first decide what are the possible outcomes you are expecting from the experiment. The hypothesis should be based on the test variables in a way that either a positive result is expected or a negative one. In case positive controls are used then this means that the hypothesis you proposed is likely to be accepted while in case negative controls are used then this means that the hypothesis you proposed is likely to be rejected.
For the protocol: Once the hypothesis and objective are set then the variables to be measured can be decided upon. In case effect of infection on movement needs to be studied then the infection needs to be controlled in the beetles so that corelation of progression of infection and effect on movement can be drawn.
