Question

a gas is compressed from an initial volume of 5.75 L to a final volume of 1.21 L by an external pressure of 1.00 ATM. during the compression the gas releases 122J of heat. what is the Change in internal energy of the gas. Exercise 6.54-Enhanced-with Feedback Part A from an initial volume of 5.75 L A gas is compr to a final volume of 1.21 L by an external pressure of 1.00 atm. During the compression the gas releases 122 J of heat What is the change in internal energy of the gas? Express your answer to three significant figures. Explanation / Answer

W = -Pext(Vf-Vi)

P = 1.0atm

Vi = 5.75 L

Vf = 1.21 L

put values in above expression

W = -Pext(Vf-Vi)

W = -1.0atm (1.21L - 5.75L)

W = 4.54 atm.L

W = 4.54 *101.33 J

W = 460.0J

Q = -122 J (negative because system is releasing heat)

delta H = Q +W

= -122 J + 460 J

= 338 J

Answer: 338 J
