Question

In a lab experiment on solubility, I mixed Silver Nitrate and Sodium Chloride. A precipitate formed. I then added aqueous ammonia, and the precipitate dissolved. I then added nitric acid and the precipitate reformed, a vapor was formed, and the beaker grew warm to the touch.

I need help with: 1. the equilibrium reaction equation for sivler nitrate and sodium chloride reacting

2. the net ionic equation for the reaction (which involves one of the species in the reaction just written) when aqueous ammonia is added

3. The net ionic equation that occurs when nitric acid is added

Thanks!

Explanation / Answer

(1) AgNO3(aq) + NaCl(aq) -------> NaNO3(aq) +AgCl(s) so AgCl Precipitate is formed in first reaction.

(2) on adding Ammonia (NH3) reacts with AgCl ppt as follows

AgCl(s) + 2NH3(aq) ------> Ag(NH3)2+(aq) + Cl-(aq) thats why ppt dissolved on adding Ammonia.

(3) on adding HNO3 reaction is

2HNO3(aq) +   Ag(NH3)2+(aq) + Cl-(aq) ------> 2NH4+ + 2NO3- + AgCl(s) Again Precipitate of AgCl is formed.
