Question

6. Use the following data for the reaction: 4CH,N+CO H.O Experiment 4NO CH,N 3.8 x 10* 3.8 x 10 7.6 x 10 O2 , M/min 2.4 x 10 1.25 x 10 6.0 x 10 3.0 x 10 Also find the rate when [C2H,N] is 0.004 M and [O.] is 0.02 M 7. Draw a reasonable representation of the progress of reaction. The reaction is: A2 (g) +3B2 (g) 2AB, (g) This reaction is found to be zeroth order in A and first order in B2 with a half-life of 8.00 minutes. The initial conditions are; [X, (g), = [Y; (g), -3.0 M; and [XY, (g)b 2.0 M. Draw a reasonable sketch of the progress of this reaction to completion (until the limiting reagent runs out), 139

Explanation / Answer

Ans 6 :

In experiment 1 and 2 , when the concentration of C2H3N is kept constant and that of O2 is halved , the rate of reaction becomes 1/4 , so the order of reaction is 2 with respect to O2.

In exp 2 and 3 , when the concentration of C2H3N is doubled and that of O2 is halved , the rate of reactio becomes half . So the order of the reaction is 1 with respect to C2H3N.

rate law will be given as :

rate = k[C2H3N][O2]2

from exp 1:

2.4 x 109 = k(3.8 x 10-6) (5.0 x 10-3)2

k = 2.53 x 10-5 M-2/min

Now putting the values given :

rate = 2.53 x 10-5 (0.004) (0.02)2

rate = 4.04 x 10-11 M/min
