Testing for CI, starch, and glucose Time 0 min -lyn, Contents of Dialysis Bag mn 30 min CI Test Observations nhitt CI present? Starch Test Observations hay veuiow Ncllo w Starch present? Glucose Test Observations dark Glucose present? Questions and Problems Q1 Which substance(s) were found in the water outside the dialysis bag? Q2 How did those substance(s) get into the water outside the dialysis bag?Explanation / Answer
SOLUTION:
At 0 minutes, the colour of the solution outside the bag should be colorless. But as the time proceeds, the substances start moving out of the bag due to osmosis. So, in the table, at 0 min, the colour for all the solutions should be colorless, which tells that the Cl-, starch and glucose are absent in the water outside dialysis bag.
At 30 min, the color for Cl- test will be white, starch test will be dark yellow and glucose should be orange. This tells that in the solution outside the bag, only Cl- and glucose are present. Starch is absent in it.
Q1. The substances which come out of dialysis bag are glucose and Cl-.
Q2. The substances move out of the dialysis bag due to osmosis. The substance tends to move from higher concentration to lower concentration. The concentration outside the dialysis bag was ess, thus the Cl- and glucose moves out.
The starch did not move out because the dialysis bag was not permeable to starch. The pore size of the dialysis bag were small for starch molecules.
