Question

Redox Challenge Note: This problem requires content from after fall break. A) Bacteria are used in sewage treatment plants to digest waste. The reaction where ammonium ions are removed from wastewater is: 5CO2(g) + 55NH4+(aq) + 7602(g) CsH-O2N(s) 54NO(a) 52H:00)109H' (a) Determine the total number of electrons transferred in the reaction as written. Hints: 1) If you get 304 it is not the answer. 2) The oxidation number on the single N in CsH7O2N is -3. B) If a sewage plant processes 4.7 million gallons per day of water with an NH4 concentration of 9.2 x 103 mol/L, how many pounds of solid waste are produced per day? (Check the Internet for metric to English conversions.) Page 6 of 6

Explanation / Answer

A) 5 moles of CO2 are converted into C5H7NO2, i.e. 5*(-4) is changed to -6.

Here, -6-(-20) = 14 electrons are lost.

55 moles of NH4+ are converted into 54 moles of NO2-, and the remaining 1 N is as such, i.e. no loss, no gain, i.e. 54*(-3) is changed to 54*(+3).

Here, 162-(-162) = 324 electrons are lost.

Finally, 76 moles of O2 of '0' oxidation state are converted into 76*2 moles of -2 oxidation state.

Here, 152*(-2) - 0 = 304 electrons are gained.

Therefore, the total no. of electrons transferred = 324-304 = a total of 20 electrons are lost
