Explanation / Answer

1) Oxidation involves loss of electrons and reduction involves gain of electrons

If we see both the hallf-reactions,

Mn2+ (aq) + 2e- -------> Mn (s) ..................(i)

Mn2+ is gaining 2 electrons to become Mn0 means it is undergoing REDUCTION.

Al (s) -------> Al3+ (aq) + 3e-....................(ii)

Al is losing 3 electrons to become Al3+ means it is undergoing OXIDATION.

2) To get a balanced equation, Multiply eqaution (i) with 3 and equation (ii) with 2 and add them

3 Mn2+ (aq) + 2 Al (s)  -------> 3 Mn (s) + 2 Al3+ (aq)
