F17 UTA-707 6. Complete the diagram below by supplying the missing products (1 and 2) and Enthalpy CH4+202e . Complete Combustion Product 1: Product 2: Enthalpy 3: 7. An exothermic reaction A B was carried out in a calorimeter containing a dilute aqueous solution. A 0.32 g sample of A was completely consumed during the reaction causing the solution t increase in temperature by 15.4 °C·The solution in the calorimeter weighs 57.0 g. Assuming that the specific heat of the solution is the same as pure water, calculate the rxn for this reaction.

Explanation / Answer

1. CH4(g)+ 2O2(g) -------> (incomplete combustion ) CO+ 2H2O(l)+0.5O2, deltaH1= -607 KJ

CH4(g)+2O2(g)--------->CO2+2H2O(l) complete combustion, deltaH=-890 Kj

According to Hesse's law, the enthalpy change for a reaction is same whether the reactinon is carried out in a single step or multiple steps.

enthalpy enthalpy change for complete combustion (-890)= enthalpy change of incomplete combustion + combsutino of incompletely combusted products (deltaH2)

deltaH2= -890+607 Kj= -283 KJ

2. Enthalpy change during the reaction= -mass of the solution* specific heat* rise in temperature ( since there is an increase in temperature, the reaction is exothermic and the enthalpy change is -ve)

=-57*4.184*15.4 =-3672 joules

enthalpy of reaction/gm of A = -3672/0.32 j/gm = -11475 J/gm= -11.475 Kj/gm
