Question
COhat an organic molecule with five or fewer carbon atoms for every functional t an organic molecule with five or fewer carbon atoms per any polar group that can hydrogen bond is soluble in water. functional group will be water soluble 4. Expla in why benzoic acid is not soluble in water yet sodium benzoate is. (You are given the structure of each to he lp you with the explanation.) (5 points) o Na What can be used to remove an acid compound from an organic layer and cause it to be soluble in the aqueous layer? (5 points) a. a stronger acid b. a base c. salt d. it will go into the water phase when it is added with the organic solvernt automaticallyExplanation / Answer
Polar solvent dissolves polar solute and nonpolar splvent dissolves nonpolar solute. Benzoic acid is an organic molecule and is non polar in nature. Water being a polar solvent having a higher dieletric constant, cannot solubilise benzoic acid. On the other hand, converting benzoic acid to its sodium salt ( ionic) makes it polar and hence gets solubilise in water.
