Name, Lab Day: Mon. Tues. Wed. Thurs. Fri. Prelaboratory Exercise for the Periodic Properties Experiment 1. a) Provide the first ionization energies for the alkaline earth metals listed below. Ba Sr b) What is the main factor which influences the trend evidenced in 1a)? In your answer explain how the trend reflects this dependence. 2. Define density: 3. What is meant by determining the volume of a solid by displacement? 4. How will the density of Si be determined in this experiment? 6. How will the density of Ge be determined in this experiment? Why are you able to approximate the value of Ge from your experimental data?Explanation / Answer
Solution :- First ionization energy of Ba = 503 KJ/mol , Sr = 550 KJ/mol , Ca = 590 KJ/mol , Mg = 738 KJ/mol
REASON : As we go down the group number of principle shell increases as a result distance between nucleus and electron increases hence electron become easily bounded means electron are not in full control of proton which causes the decrease in attractive force , so it is eassy to pull out a lossely bounded electron hence the first ionization energy decreases down the group.
B) Density :- density is the mass occupied per unit volume .
density = mass/volume
C) Determining the volume by displacement :- It means dip the solid in a container full of water ( container should e garduated fask or cylinder) and collect the water displaced by the solid and measure the volume of displaced water volume of soliid will be equal to volume of water displaced by water,
D) density of Si and Ge can be calculated by first calulation the volume and then mass finally we can calculate density by formula and for rest information the detailes of the experiment is required.
