Into a round-bottomed (rb) flask, add 6.00 mL volume of dodecanol and 375 mg of stearic acid. Add 100 microL volume of concentrated sulfuric acid (caution!) and swirl the flask to mix the contents. Allow the reaction mixture to reflux for 16 hours.Cool the solution, decant it into a separatory funnel containing water, and rinse the flask with diethyl ether. Add this ether to the separatory funnel, shake thoroughly, and drain off the water layer, which contains the sulfuric acid and dodecanol.Wash the ether in the separatory funnel with 5% sodium bicarbonate to remove the unreacted stearic acid. Again shake, with frequent release of pressure by inverting the separatory funnel and opening the stopcock, until no further reaction is seen; then drain off the bicarbonate layer into a beaker. Wash the ether layer in the separatory funnel with saturated sodium chloride solution, and dry the solution over anhydrous Sodium sulphate in an Erlenmeyer flask. Remove the ether by evaporation or using a rotary evaporator. Recrystallize the dodecyl stearate from toluene and weight the compound after the formation of crystals. The weight of dodecyl stearate crystals should be 492 mg.
